Moonflower surprises, but only those who didn’t already know Lily B. Moonflower

Things that are NOT refreshing: taking a sip of the wrong can of beer that’s been sitting out too long, melting in a festival campground tent at sun’s first light and listening to ho-hum music that sounds recycled and too familiar. 

Things that ARE refreshing: iced tea or a dip in the lake on a hot summer day, driving a convertible with the top down and a new woman on the country music scene with true talent and ability.  

Enter: Lily B. Moonflower. Her debut album, Moonflower, is set for release February 12, 2021 and couldn’t come at a better moment in her musical journey. The daughter of a musician specializing in classical guitar and trombone, Lily grew up listening to classic Country gentlemen like Bob Wills and shuttling between her hometown and her grandparents’ place in Texas.  

In other words, she was born a country girl and her slide into country music is welcome to our ears! Twang indeed runs through her veins and as we slowly emerge from the pandemic we need a solid soundtrack. Fortunately, Moonflower delivers! 

In “Broke Bitch Blues” Lily shows off strong songwriting and storytelling abilities, including the most important one of all: relatability. While not everyone can relate to needing a six-shooter to protect themselves we’ve all had financial ups and downs and have at least felt broke even if we are able to stay fed and housed.  

In the same song she talks about having “nothing to prove.” Well, all musicians actually have a lot to prove, most of all to themselves. The difference with Lily is that she’s already proven herself even at such a young age, from the festival stages of Colorado to the 4 AM campfire jams at the Walnut Valley Bluegrass Festival in Winfield, KS.  

Lily has some advantages over your average country singer. First, her musical heritage is not hurting anything. But, more importantly, she has surrounded herself with the right people, particularly her life partner Jake Keegan (of the nationally touring bluegrass act Grassfed) and the good people at Lost Cowgirl Records. The new album sounds straight out of Nashville in terms of quality.  

This is due mostly to the musical mind of Martin Farrell, Jr. Farrell retains his heavyweight Kansas Country producer belt that he acquired with 2018’s Cosmic Western Duos, defended with 2020’s Coffee & Laundry and more than holds on to with Moonflower. Farrell demands authenticity from his artists, performing very little post-production work on the album and absolutely no auto-tuning. This means that Lily is actually as good as she sounds on these recordings 

Moonflower makes for such an exciting listen because it solidifies both Lily B. Moonflower as a true Country singer-songwriter and and the Eastern Kansas Country scene as a legitimate one worth paying attention to. It is so refreshing to hear a woman telling her stories in such a digestible way and accompanied by an amazing slate of backing musicians. Plans are already in motion for a new duo album with Lily and Keegan and even a second solo album and we cannot wait! 

Is there a Kansas Country wave coming? If Moonflower and Farrell have anything to do with it then emphatically yes.

The first Bridge video premiere of 2021 is a “quintessential Midwestern celebration of love, celebration and music,” from singer-songwriter Lily B Moonflower.  

“Midnight Song” feels just like going home again. 

As she reminisces about “late nights dancing barefoot on the honky-tonk floor” — her inspiration for the tune — Moonflower’s voice shimmers over a wistful fiddle and a dusky resonator guitar. It calls to mind the enchantment of youth, the jubilation of love and the comfort of kinship. Often, our most treasured memories.  

The lead single from her upcoming debut album, “Midnight Song” also represents a mile marker in Moonflower’s career.  

“I started making music at 8 years old when my grandpa gave me a guitar, and now that I'm 23, my original music is now seeing the light of day,” she said. 

And that original music also got to make its way home – specifically, to Moonflower’s hometown of Desoto, Kansas, where most of the video was filmed.  

"Shooting the video in my hometown with all my friends and family felt like coming full circle,” she said. She also said that it represented the “magical, fleeting dream state that music creates.” 

It’s that moment of ecstasy where you’re lost in a song. Where time feels suspended. Where you’re twirling around a campfire, laughing with friends at your favorite neighborhood haunt, trading riffs on a small-town stage, dancing barefoot on the honky-tonk floor.  

And in that moment, you’re home.

Americana songwriter Lily B Moonflower of Lawrence, KS will release debut album “Moonflower” February 12, 2021. Telling stories about being “Wild and Free” to having the “Broke Bitch Blues”, Lily has been making her way through the Americana and jamgrass scene sharing her free-spirited style and soulful country voice from the main stages and around the campfires. Lily calls her music “folk n roll with a twang" and delivers her songs with grace and grit. Typically accompanied by a slew of talented bluegrass pickers, she also features an electric rock band setup. 

“Moonflower” was recorded at Lost Cowgirl Records studio by producer Martin Farrell Jr.. The album features some of Kansas City and Lawrence’s finest players including Jake Keegan on dobro, Colby Allen Walter on mandolin, Michael Turnbo & Shannon O’Shea on fiddle, Miki P on drums, Jenna Rae on saxophone and back up vocals, and producer Martin Farrell Jr. on back up vocals, pedal steel, piano, telecaster guitar, tambourine, and bells. The album captures a traditional roots sound but also has “dream-like” moments and explores new dimensions in traditional music. 

Lily B is a ray of sunshine on and off the stage and her passion for roots music is apparent at her live shows and through her music. This debut album gives you a peek into the mind of a young songwriter who longs to be connected to people and nature, loves searching for crystals and arrowheads, has experienced love and heartbreak, and brings the party to every show. She has shared the stage with Lukas Nelson and Promise of the Real, Jim Lauderdale, The Hillbenders, and many more. Lily is on a lifelong journey of creating music and this debut release will be one of many more to come.

On Tuesday May 7th Lily B Moonflower band opened for the amazing Lukas Nelson and Promise Of The Real at Knuckleheads Saloon in Kansas City! 

It was a sold out show, packed in to the max! There was a great sense of community with friends gathering and singing along to Lily and Lukas's hit songs! Lukas Nelson and Promise Of The Real are celebrating the release of their new album in the most active way! They have one of the coolest rider requests ever, they are coordinating street teams to organize pop up famers markets out front before the shows, so fans can buy local, supporting farmers in the area! The record, Turn Off The News (Build A Garden) is a concerted effort between Promise Of The Real and Fantasy Recordings, to not only bring organic music to the world, but also to remind people to get informed about what's happening all around them in all moments! These guys are the most genuine and have touched so many souls on their journey.

This past weekend, the creative juices were flowing between Lily B Moonflower and Charming Pixels by Ashton! There were moments of joy, strength, and creativity captured by legendary photographer Ashton Riffel, owner of Charming Pixels. The two young entrepreneurs ventured out into the falling leaves in the autumn woods along with Lily B Moonflower's loyal companion, Brewski Bernard! Here's what they said about the experience, " We love working together so much, the creativity between us is always flowing and the energy levels are always thru the roof. We've been close friends since I was a freshman in high school and we bring out the best in each other! We've supported each other constantly thru our journeys of being entrepreneurs and artists! Young business women are stronger when we unite! It's like an unstoppable force!"

Ashton Riffel is a photographer & marketing manager for Angel Competition Bikinis full time. Her personal photography business Charming Pixels by Ashton, captures family photos, senior portraits weddings, performing arts, action sports, and many many other styles of photography. Lily says, "I feel blessed to be able to work with such a talented, passionate and driven photographer, and to have a friendship with her and support her thru her journey. I imagine we'll be friends forever, no matter where life takes either one of us!"

Lily also mentions, "Its gonna be so tough picking the photo I want to use as the album artwork for my debut album Moonflower!"

On 10/27/2018 Lily B Moonflower was honored to play at the new pumpkin patch Meuschke Farms in Lawrence Kansas.

She had a wonderful day on the farm, here is what she had to say about it, "I had an amazing experience today at the new pumpkin patch in Lawrence called Meuschke Farms, owned by Shane Meuschke. It's an amazing family run business with unbelievably good energy! They also breed beautiful dogs out there and I got to bring my dawg Brewski! He had the time of his life! It's a gorgeous developing property, that hosts music, artists, families, and soon to be weddings in their upcoming venue! I brought out my artist friend Elaina Mcendree of Ardency Artistry to do LIVE ART while I sang my original music! There was amazing apple cider, juicy pumpkins, and a beautiful sunset to top it all off. I will never forget that October day!!!"
