Lyrics
Where the Wakarusa River meets the Kaw
In Eastern Kansas where the storm clouds draw
Together in a mysterious way
The skies turn from blue to gray
It was 1909 and times were tough
For the 18 year old Ross Bullock
After losin his brother & losin his dad
He couldn't bare to lose the family farm they had
So he mounted his horse & headed East
With pain on his mind, no joy in the least
He had nothin to lose but to save his farm
With intention to rob, this man was armed
He tied up front the bank & carefully
Left the rope loose to get easily free
They would run home thru the thunder & rain
A foolish way to keep the farm in his name
Two wrongs never make a right but
Ross Bullock had just one fight
To save the piece of land that his father loved
And he would do it all with some grace from above
So he took another chance & rode back to town
A month after the crime went down
People been joking so they called his bluff
But the boy & his friend, they’d had enough
Shots from the revolver rang thru the town
Fred Starr has just hit the ground
They take off on their horses & fly down by the river
Two young killers causin trouble with the trigger
It takes a cold heart to kill an innocent man
And the towns people knew they'd strike again
The boys were surrounded Ross had one bullet left, There was only one way out of paying for theft
Back in 1909 things weren't the same at all
The boy lay dying on display down at city hall
What the town don't know as they laugh & joke
Are the heartbreaks that turned the boys heart to stone
Love & heartbreak are one in the same
Here one day & when they're gone it's a shame
Right & wrong, ya gotta do one
You never know what drove someone
To dig their own grave
